Born in Hastings, James spent his adolescent life in Dunedin. He discovered art at 15 years old, and fell in love with paint. James studied at, and graduated from, the Dunedin School of Art 2011 with a BFA.

James has explored painting through pouring since 2010, inspired by the topographical effects from the paint mixing and the line between intention and chance... he says "working with chance each moment becomes much more exciting".

Based in Dunedin James has exhibited since 2009 in group and solo shows in Dunedin and around New Zealand. He has been a finalist in some major art competitions - the Waikato National Contemporary Art Award 2013 and the Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards 2015. He continues to exhibit and install murals.
