Joanna Braithwaite Art Award

Congratulations to Joanna Braithwaite, who has won the prestigious ‘Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize’, with her work Bold and the Beautiful.
The award, which was established in 2017 by Ravenswood School for Girls, aims to recognise, encourage, and promote women in the visual arts.
Judges spoke of her artwork as “A bold and delightfully humorous work”, noting that “this masterful painting characterises our unique Australian birds whilst celebrating the eccentric in all of us”.

I Too Am in Paradise II is a glimpse into the secret lives of plants. Over the course of nearly a year, Raewyn Atkinson used a time-lapse camera to document the growth of ngutu kākā mā (white kaka beak) plants that she had potted in cluster of unfired clay urns. Set in her garden in Te Whanganui-a-tara Wellington, the subsequent video shows aspects of a scene not usually observable in a still image: the slow, subtle processes of development and decay, circadian rhythms, and all manner of weather from blustery winds and blotchy rain to occasional bursts of sun …

The Wading Birds Of Drybread is a body of work that Gregory O’Brien produced during the last 12 months as he took up the artist-in-residence programme in Alexandra’s elegant Ernst Plischke designed Henderson House. The exhibition will be showing at Eastern Southland Gallery from the 16 February - 5 April 2019.

Euan Macleod Painter at Pātaka

Euan Macleod Painter on at Pātaka art and museum from 2nd September to 2nd December. Pātaka is the final venue for the survey show painter curated by Gregory O’Brien for the Tauranga Art Gallery in 2014. Since then it has been toured by Exhibition Services to many regional public galleries.

New artists in residence at Henderson House

Greg O’brien and Jenny Bornholdt are currently artists in residence at the Henderson House, Alexandra, the first to do so since it was newly renovated. Previously an artists in residence for writers, the house is now open to visual artists too. Jen and Greg have had a constant stream of visitors during their first few months there, and recently during a visit from Robin White, Greg, Robin and Grahame Sydney visited St Bathans hall (made famous by Laurence Aberhart).

Midway: a Collectif Génération collaboration by John Yau and Kathy Barry exhibited at Objectspace, October 2017.

Midway is one of twelve handmade books produced in collaboration between Ameriacn poet John Yau and New Zealand visual artist Kathy Barry. It was commissioned by Gervais Jassaud for his ongoing Collectif Génération project.

Sam Duckor-Jones Poetry

Turbine/Kapohau, a New Zealand journal of new writing has two of Sam Duckor-Jones’s poems in the latest issue online. Sam also has recently completed the MA in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters in 2017.

Euan Macleod Painter, curated by Gregory O’Brien, and toured by Exhibition Services opened Friday August 18 and will run until Sunday November 19, 2017 at Te Manawa Museum, Palmerston North . It is open everyday from 10am-5pm.

The next Venue for the Exhibition at Pah Homestead , opens Wednesday 21 March 2017 and going until the 20 May 2018.
